There was an early start to business at the circuit this Saturday morning – really early. At 8am, the entrance to the Welcome Centre looked more like a Formula One-themed Hollywood-runway: Team bosses and drivers trod the ‘Styrian Green Carpet’ to meet the enthusiastic early bird fans. It was only morning and the #AustrianGP was already living up to the theme of a ‘Motorsports Festival with Feeling’. And for those who missed out on Saturday, there’s another one tomorrow, Sunday, from 8-10am. It’s your last chance to meet the stars!
In between FP3 and Qualifying, the fans were entertained by a display of motorcycle stunt riding by Arunas Gibieza and precision drifting from the Red Bull Drift Brothers.
No everyone saw this coming: Valtteri Bottas set a new track record on his way to taking pole position, lapping the Red Bull Ring in 1.04:251. The Finn placed himself ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton, who is relegated to P8 due to a five place grid penalty for changing his gearbox.
Bottas is a man on a mission on Sunday:
“It’s a mega feeling. I do enjoy driving here, the car and the grip is getting better and better. Now I only got one target: to win.”
With qualifying finished, the Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull Racing drivers headed to the FanZone, where they were greeted by brilliant sunshine – as bright as the smiles of the fans that attended the show.
As usual on the day prior to the Grand Prix, the rehearsal for the Parade of Legends took place. There will be 10 international motorsports heroes taking part in this year’s edition and they will be driving a collection of legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans cars. Missed the rehearsal today? Find out what happened HERE.
Feeling impulsive? Left it to the last minute? No problem! There are still tickets to be had on the door. The ticket office is open from 8am-2pm tomorrow for your spontaneous motorsport pleasure!
