F1 is back at the Red Bull Ring

The 2018 edition of the Formula 1 at the Red Bull Ring will be even faster: Last year Lewis Hamilton had set the best pace in FP1 with a time of 1:05.975 minutes. Today he bettered his time with a 1:04.839 in FP1, and then faster again with 1:04.579 during the second free practice. But Team mate Valterri Bottas as well as Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) are not too far behind.

FP1 as it happened

11:00: The engines start up! It’s cloudy, but dry.
11:30: First quarter is done and Lewis Hamilton leads in the Mercedes.
11:39: Unsafe Release for Stoffel Vandoorne and Sebastian Vettel, both are requested to see the stewards after the session. The Ferrari driver had to brake hard when the Belgian driver was released too late by his McLaren crew.
11:41: Max Verstappen spins at the exit of  turn four. Car undamaged and he re-joins the track.
11:45: Top 5 at half time: Hamilton leads Ricciardo, Bottas, Verstappen and Vettel.
11:49: Stoffel Vandoorne damages his front wing and his McLaren mechanics have some work to do. Toro Rosso driver Pierre Gasly also damaged his front wing on a kerb but it wasn’t as bad as Vandoorne.
12:00: Mercedes takes the 1-2.
12:30: Fastest lap on ultrasoft tyres for Lewis Hamilton, teammate Bottas is just 0.127 seconds shy. Max Verstappen powers to third, just 0.233 seconds behind Hamilton. Vettel snatches fourth in front of Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Räikkönen.

Mercedes Motorsport CEO Toto Wolf after the FP1: “It’s tight, but it was a good start for us. Our car is working pretty well, you could see that on the onboard data too.”

FP2 as it happened

15:00: Next session, weather stays dry.
15:16: Sauber driver Marcus Ericsson drives off into the gravel. Ten minutes later Carlos Sainz does the same thing on the same part of the track.
