Hamilton takes pole for Styrian Grand Prix

Rain ensured for a frantic qualifying session in Styria that seemingly continued just where the eventful Austrian Grand Prix left off a few days ago. Max Verstappen continued his strong performances from the practice runs on Saturday, with the Dutchman taking second place in qualifying amid extremely difficult wet conditions at the Red Bull Ring. He will line up alongside reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton on the front row of the inaugural Styrian Formula 1 Grand Prix tomorrow. Perhaps the “Flying Dutchman” was able to get some hints on finding the ideal line by studying Dario Costa‘s track preview made with a race plane – you can watch the video of that here!

Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) will start on the second row, with the Spaniard taking his best ever starting position of his career in third.

Qualifying delayed

The grim weather forecast proved to be correct and FP3 was canceled due to the rain at Spielberg in the morning, while qualifying started with a 46-minute delay amid some very difficult conditions - Sergio Perez became a high-profile victim of the weather in Q1, while Charles Leclerc – who had been on the podium at the Austrian Grand Prix a few days ago – followed in Q2. Only at the end of the Q3 session did Hamilton move past Verstappen into P1.

Views on qualifying

Lewis Hamilton (GBR / Mercedes): “What a difficult day it was. It was so hard for us all, and you couldn’t see where you were driving. On my penultimate lap I had a lot of aquaplaning, and my heart skipped a beat or two. I love days like these though. We are prepared for everything.”

Max Verstappen (NED / Red Bull Racing): “I battled as hard as I could. I had aquaplaning, spinning wheels, and at times I couldn‘t see anything and always had to find a clear line through. It was the same for everyone though. I still had a chance on the last lap, but it wasn‘t enough against Lewis today. We have a good pace in the dry, and the car is quicker than last weekend.“

Carlos Sainz (ESP / McLaren): “A third place start is the best in my career! Being able to drive in these kind of conditions is what a F1 driver is made of. It is actually loads of fun!”
