Max Verstappen wins the AustrianGP!

What a Grand Prix Sunday! It‘s probably been the best race of the season so far in a red-white-red sea of flags in the grandstands and with an incredible atmosphere at the Spielberg Ring. Overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the 185,000 visitors from Thursday to Sunday, Projekt Spielberg says “Thank you!”

Max Verstappen wins Red Bull Racing's home race

“Well done, Max! You’ve won the Austrian Grand Prix!” Those were the first congratulatory words via team radio for the driver from the Netherlands, after he got the dream result for his team’s home race. “I took the win at the Red Bull Ring in a Red Bull Racing car! How unbelievable is that?” he cheered on the team radio.

Fourth F1-victory for Verstappen

Max’s win ended Mercedes’ four year winning streak at the Red Bull Ring and was celebrated by almost 19.000 fans who stormed the track, after having travelled all the way from the Netherlands to see their hero race. The podium was completed by the Ferraris of Kimi Räikönen and Sebastian Vettel followed closely by Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen (Haas).

Mercedes & Ricciardo out

Shocked faces in the Mercedes pit: A double DNF instead of a double victory! In addition to Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo the Red Bull driver – who celebrated his 29th birthday today – was unable to finish the race. The Formula 1 Driver’s World Championship took a dramatic turn at the Red Bull Ring with Sebastian Vettel snatching the lead.

Home glory in Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup

High calibre racing action in the feeder series of Formula 2, GP3 and the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup warmed up the track and the crowd. The Austrian National Anthem was the icing on the cake for the enthusiastic spectators when it blared from the PA system for the first time at around 1PM after 19 year old Thomas Preining from Linz took the win in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. “A home race is of course always something special and I had a good feeling here, the track is a dream – in the middle of nature,” said the Porsche junior driver.

Legends…

The ‘2018 Legends Parade’ was full of  international motorsport heroes, that enjoyed “just an awesome time” throughout the proceedings: Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger, Dieter Quester, Franz Klammer, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Jochen Mass & Co. drove spectacular cars for legendary marques like Alfa Romeo, BMW, Porsche, Lancia and Aston Martin.

…and celebrities

As befits a Formula 1 spectacle, numerous celebrities made appearances at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Marcel Hirscher and Andreas Gabalier presented winner’s trophies, while local sports celebrities Gregor Schlierenzauer, Christian Schiester and Benni Karl were present to applaud the winning drivers.  International Olympic Athletes were also on site as well as NHL player Tomáš Hertl and Argentina’s sailor Santiago Lange.

Just 365 days left until the 2019 motorsport festival

After today’s victory by Max Verstappen, the countdown for the return of the premier class from 28th to 30th of June 2019 has already begun – and it will again feature the public pit lane walk, the Styrian Green Carpet, the Legends Parade, concerts and many more highlights yet to be announced. Purchase your 2019 tickets prior to the 31st of December 2018 at www.projekt-spielberg.com/f1tickets to take advantage of the 20% Early Bird discount (excluding VIP).
