Thank you, Niki!

The „Formula 1 myWorld Großer Preis von Österreich 2019“ is the first Austrian GP without Niki Lauda. At the F1 Fan-Zone, all weekend long the 1984 McLaren that took Niki Lauda to the first – and so far only – Austrian home GP win was on display. Also in the paddock the 1975 Ferrari was presented on which Lauda earned his first world championship. The tunnel leading to the paddock presented a picture show.

Turn 1 now the “Niki Lauda Corner“

Fans, teams and drivers took the 2019 race Sunday as a chance to remember Niki Lauda, who sadly passed away this year. On Sunday morning Turn 1 of the Red Bull Ring got the name “Niki Lauda Corner” and during the ceremony his friend Dr. Helmut Marko handed over a Red Bull Ring sculpture to Nikis wife Birgit and his son Lukas Lauda. Prior to that, 60.000 “Kapperls” – caps, Nikis trademark – had been distributed to the grandstands.

Birgit Lauda: “This means a very lot to us and our whole family as it would have been a great honour for Niki – even though he did not like tributes and trophies and gave away some of them. He had one corner named after him already in the past, but the name was taken away again. He was very upset and sad about that, I can remember and that is why I know today is a special honour for him to get back his corner in such a nice ceremony.

Lukas Lauda: “I am proud and happy and want to say thank you to Red Bull, Helmut and all the others too. As Birgit said, I think he would have been very proud today as he now has his Turn 1. I believe before it was Turn 5 or 6 and he would have liked that so much. I am happy also, to be here.

Helmut Marko: “There was a corner named after Niki Lauda in the past already but with the re-design of the Red Bull Ring that one got lost and Niki was upset about that. I always told him: ‘You will get another corner!’. I think now is the right moment to dignify the mythos, personality and Niki Lauda’s achievements for the world of Motorsport. We took Turn 1 for that as that is the place with the most action and where we see the wildest moves – so everything Niki lived to the fullest and what he liked most. I think he would have been a very, very happy man today.

Today, jointly we say: Thank you, Niki!
