#AustrianGP: Dovizioso wins, Ducati remains unbeaten in Spielberg

Andrea Dovizioso pulled off the probably best overtake of his career and was crowned the king of the Ring! A thriller of a MotoGP race, big emotions and 197,315 fans attending the race made for a perfect scenerio. From the “Vale” grandstand to the KTM-grandstand, to the ‘Spielberg MotoGP City’, the circuit was packed to the rafters. It made for a perfect MotoGP on the fourth time the the Red Bull Ring has hosted the #AustrianGP.

A last-minute victory – again!

It was a re-run of 2017 race as Marc Márquez and Andrea Dovizioso battled it out until the last lap once more. In the end, it was Dovi who took the win by a margin of just 0.213 seconds and prevented Márquez from taking his first victory in the Austrian GP. The world champion will just have to come back again next year.

Even the modest Andrea Dovizioso seemed to be surprised: “When we reached the final corner, I did not think I could make it stick but it was the last corner so I had to try. I wanted to try. Sometimes these crazy things work out.”

Marc Márquez took it in his stride. “I am happy,” he said. “We made a mistake with the choice of the rear tyre and Dovi made a brilliant job.” Márquez still leads the World Championship by 58 points. And the Spanish rider has until at least 2025 to take his first Red Bull Ring win here: MotoGP to stay at Red Bull Ring until 2025.

‘Rookie of the Year’  is best Yamaha rider

Brilliant showing by the “Rookie of the Year” Fabio Quartararo who took the third spot on the podium, leading fellow Yamaha riders Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales in fourth and fifth respectively. Alex Rins finished in sixth just in front of Francesco Bagnaia, who celebrated his best MotoGP result so far in seventh. Miguel Oliveira, Danilo Petrucci and Franco Morbidelli rounded up the Top-Ten.

Happy Days for KTM in Moto2

Brad Binder gave himself the perfect 24th birthday present by taking a home win for KTM in Moto2! It was his first triumph of the season and the perfect gift for himself and for the racing orange fans. “I couldn’t have asked for a better day for my first win of the season – it’s my birthday and KTM’s home race. It was a hard day, now it’s a beautiful day,” the South African rider said, who will be moving up to MotoGP next year with a ride at KTM Tech3.

VIP fans on track

There were some big names in Austrian motorsport among the fans on Sunday, including Red Bull Motorsport advisor Dr Helmut Marko, Dakar winner Matthias Walkner and Austrian rally champion Raimund Baumschlager. Other special guests included BMX pro Senad Grosic, karate world champion Alisa Buchinger, Olympic sailor Hans-Peter Steinacher, ski legends Franz Klammer and Hans Knauß, as well as Austria’s record football player Andi Herzog – and all of them were thrilled by the two-wheeled action at the Spielberg.
