Dovizioso treble as Ducati win again at Spielberg

Jack Miller finished third behind surprise package Joan Mir, with Binder fourth.

Ducati have continued their unbeaten run at the Red Bull Ring in 2020 with their fifth win in a row at the circuit. In a highly dramatic race, which included a restart, Andrea Dovizioso took his third win in Spielberg after 2017 and 2019 having started fourth. Joan Mir took his first spot on a MotoGP podium in second, with the Spaniard pushing Ducati’s Jack Miller into third on the very last lap. Maverick Viñales could only finish the Austrian GP in tenth after starting on pole.

Restart shakes field up

KTM Factory Racing rider Pol Pol Espargaro led the field after a strong start before a spectacular crash between France’s Johann Zarco and Italian Franco Morbidelli – thankfully neither was seriously hurt – made a restart necessary. Dovizioso took full advantage of the fresh start, while Espargaro was unable to keep pace and was then sent out of the race by Miguel Oliveira – with the Portuguese racer also needing to retire. Brad Binder was the top performing KTM rider with an impressive fourth place after the South African started in 17th.

Spectacular race day at the Red Bull Ring

The race day was incredible with all classes providing racing to the absolute limit. The Moto3 World Championship riders kicked off the race day in accordance with tradition. Austria’s Maximilian Kofler started in 26th place but was able to move up one position and ended his first home race of 2020 in 25th. Spain’s Albert Arenas secured a win for KTM. The Moto2 race was interrupted following a bad accident involving Enea Bastianini (ITA), Edgar Pons (ESP), Hafizh Syahrin (MAL) and Andi Farid Izdihar (INA). None of the riders picked up serious injuries. After the restart, Jorge Martin (ESP) took a home win for the Red Bull KTM Ajo team.

Views on the Austrian GP:

Andrea Dovizioso (ITA/Ducati): “That was a very strange race for a lot of reasons – it was two races and two starts. It was really difficult to keep the energy up for the restart. I knew that I had more power in some curves and had the chance to set the pace. It was a great win for the team!”

Joan Mir (ESP/Suzuki): “It‘s a great day. We had a few races already in which we had enough speed to get onto the podium. I am happy to get my first top 3 finish in MotoGP, and I want to greet everyone who was not able to be here due to the Covid situation. We are enjoying the moment now, as it‘s a fantastic day for us!”

Jack Miller (AUS/Ducati): “We had no other tyre options as we had no mediums left. I gave the maximum with the softs. The hards weren’t working. 20 laps of racing can be very long. Unfortunately I just missed out on second place. I tried to block him on the inside, but I couldn‘t keep the front up and Joan went past me.”
