MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring: Fascinating facts on the most exciting back-to-back races of the year

Ducati are an unstoppable force at Spielberg. Marc Márquez can’t get a win here. KTM have not had much luck in their home race. Plus Andrea Dovizioso is the fastest man at the Red Bull Ring. Here is your quick-fire history of the Austrian GP.

Four years have now passed since the elite racing series made its comeback in Austria. This year the fans have two race weekends to look forward to: The Austrian GP on 16 August 2020 and the Grand Prix of Styria on 23 August 2020.

Spielberg is Ducati country

Ducati has won every race since MotoGP’s return in Austria: with Andrea Iannone (2016), Andrea Dovizioso (2017 + 2019) and Jorge Lorenzo (2018). With six podium places in four years, the Italian racing outfit is without doubt the most successful team. Honda have earned four places on the podium and Yamaha two, with no other team yet to make it into the top 3.

Half a second makes the difference

The gap between the winner and the runner-up in the past three years has been 0.519 seconds - in total! Three times in a row, dramatic battles have ensued all the way to the finish line. The gaps between 1st and 2nd place were: 2019: 0.213s / 2018: 0.130s / 2017: 0.176s / 2016: 0.938s

The Red Bull Ring keeps on getting faster

Andrea Dovizioso took exactly 39 minutes and 34.771 seconds to complete the race last year. At the first race at the Red Bull Ring in 2016, Andrea Iannone's victorious run took around 12 seconds longer. The average speed has increased from 182.401 km/h (2016) to 183.200 km/h (2019). For comparison - Mick Doohan won the last race at the A1-Ring in 1997 in 41:48.665 minutes at an average speed of 173.5 km/h.

Nobody else boasts as much success at the Austrian GP as Andrea Dovizioso. The Italian Ducati star has started from the front row in every race and finished on the podium every time so far.

Marc Márquez waiting to break Red Bull Ring duck

The eight-time world champion came to Austria on top of the standings every year from 2016 to 2019. Marc Márquez has taken pole position three times, and has finished second three times, but has not yet been able to win. Particularly disappointing for him is that it has been extremely close every year, with Marc never being more than two-tenths of a second away from winning. As a small consolation - with a lap time of 1:23.023 (Q2 2019), the reigning champion at least owns the title for the Fastest Ever Lap at the Red Bull Ring.

The Red Bull Ring is the fastest race track in the world

No other race track in the world is as quick on average as the Red Bull Ring. The fastest average speed driven by anyone at Spielberg is 187.2 km/h (Marc Márquez), in second place comes Philip Island (AUS) with 182.173 km/h and in third place Buriram (TH) with 182.097 km/h.

No machine is faster than the Desmosedici

Fast, faster, Ducati. Since 2016, the Italian racing team’s Desmosedici has notched the top speed at every race weekend at Spielberg. The speed record is currently 316.7 km/h by Andrea Dovizioso in the 2019 race.

KTM out of luck in home race so far

A factory team from Austria, KTM, has competed for the past three years – without any success so far. Their lead rider Pol Espargaró retired twice and once was unable to compete due to injury, while test driver Mika Kallio was able to offer some promise with a 10th place finish at their first home race in 2017. In 2019, Miguel Oliveira provided another glimmer of hope at KTM satellite team Tech 3 - the Portuguese rider made it to 8th place last year. After the first ever victory for the KTM factory team was taken by their MotoGP rookie Brad Binder last weekend in Brno, all eyes are now cast eagerly to the next two races at the Red Bull Ring.
