2016 July 1

An exciting first day on the track

The battle to lift the crown at the "Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich 2016" has begun! The stands are filling up amid the stunning alpine scenery, with the fans enjoying the motorsport to the full. Visitors have the chance to meet the stars and team bosses and get autographs over the whole weekend. The first two training sessions showed the benefits of the new tarmac - with a quicker circuit that is easy on the tyres. Mercedes dominated Friday practice on the high-speed course that runs around the Bull of Spielberg.

Records tumble on new tarmac

Nico Rosberg, the Mercedes driver and current leader of the Formula 1 world championship, is unbeaten so far at the Red Bull Ring. In both 2014 and 2015 he was first over the finishing line after 71 laps. The German made a clear statement of his intent to claim a hat-trick of titles in Austria in the Friday practice session. Rosberg beat team-mate Lewis Hamilton to first place in the first practice session. Behind him were the Ferrari pair of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen, along with Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing, who finished ahead of Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz. This confirmed the predictions for the race of Dr Helmut Marko, who said:

“Mercedes are going to dominate. We will battle Ferrari for the places behind”. The TAG Heuer Red Bull Racing adviser confirmed the ideal condition of the surface by saying: “We are quicker and the tyre wear less than expected.” The fresh tarmac already helped for a record lap time at the Red Bull Ring to be set in first practice – 1:07.373 minutes – smashing the track record of Michael Schumacher in 2003. A new official best will have to wait till Sunday though, as times in the race are the only ones valid. There were then turbulent scenes in second free practice, although Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton could not be dislodged from the top two.
