Daniel Ricciardo warms Formula 1 fans up in the middle of Vienna

The long wait was well worth it for Vienna – on Wednesday a total of around 60,000 motorsport fans lined Vienna’s Rathausplatz square over the course of the day to follow the first Formula 1 show run in the Austrian capital up close. Daniel Ricciardo really put the pedal to the metal in the world championship-winning car from 2012 to convert the space between the Vienna landmarks of the Burgtheater and the Rathaus into a racing circuit with a world-famous backdrop. Over 100 international journalists attended a press conference in Vienna with Daniel Ricciardo, Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger and Dr. Helmut Marko. Projekt Spielberg is proud of the successful start that the 2015 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria was able to make and the extraordinary day of motorsport for the whole family that was enjoyed by the visitors and the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl.

Formula 1 legends at press conference. The motorsport festival of the year in Austria could not have had a better launch. Exactly two months before the 2015 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria, Projekt Spielberg provided motorsport action up close in the middle of Vienna.
A press conference attracted over 100 members of the media from Austria, Brazil, Germany, Slovenia and Slovakia to the Rathausplatz square in order to get the chance to quiz a top-class podium. Along with local motorsport legends Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger and Dr. Helmut Marko, Daniel Ricciardo also took the time to address the international press. “The atmosphere was fantastic in Spielberg last year. I spoke to the other drivers and they were all amazed by the atmosphere,” says the Australian, who is already looking forward to the second home race of his team, Infiniti Red Bull Racing. He also used the opportunity of his visit to Vienna to have a short discussion with the Mayor, Michael Häupl, who was excited to also get the chance to meet Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger and Dr. Helmut Marko at the Rathaus.

A gift for Infiniti Red Bull Racing. After motorsport legends Niki Lauda and Dr. Helmut Marko completed a jovial press conference, the advisor to Infiniti Red Bull Racing proudly presented the assembled press pack with the trophy for the 2015 Grand Prix of Austria. In return Niki Lauda, representing the hosts of Vienna, handed a cake from the famous Demel pastry shop that featured an arty scene of the Red Bull Ring. Lauda also praised the Red Bull Ring, saying: “The Austrian Grand Prix last year was superb. You could not have done it any better. Other organisers can learn a lot from it. I am already really looking forward to it, and I expect that even more people will come this year!” The former World Champion is set to excite tens of thousands of fans along with Gerhard Berger at the Red Bull Ring on 21 June in the Legends Parade with original cars from the turbo era – Berger can barely wait for that, saying: “It was wonderful to sit in my 1987 Ferrari again. I had not had the chance to drive it until last year, but I felt at home in the cockpit straight away. The power of the racing cars of the 80s was unique. It will truly be great again. I’ve heard that Alain Prost is already training really hard as he wants to be quicker in his McLaren than Niki. The Lauda v Prost battle is about to start up all again!”

60,000 fans experience the power of Formula 1 at the Rathausplatz. At the stroke of 15:00 it was time – the eagerly awaited highlight of the day could get going in ideal show run weather. Daniel Ricciardo revved up his World-Championship winning RB8 car from 2012 and sent the Rathausplatz square, packed with 60,000 excited spectators, trembling. In addition, Pierre Gasly performed donuts on the tarmac with a NASCAR and sent plenty of smoke flying around the centre of Vienna. To follow that, motorbike stunt legend Chris Pfeiffer performed a spectacular show on two wheels. While they were waiting for the second part of the show run, the fans had the chance, in an autograph session, to meet Daniel Ricciardo, Gerhard Berger and Dr. Helmut Marko in person and pose a few questions to the experts. Before Daniel Ricciardo bode farewell to Vienna, he drove through the applauding crowds with the Austrian flag, making some more time for his fans in the process. To end the day of motorsport, top new band Tagträumer thrilled the crowds at the Red Bull Brandwagen. The five musicians were also able to have a good warm-up for the main event, as they will be on stage again at this year’s grand prix weekend in Spielberg.
