Hamilton and Rosberg on front row at Red Bull Ring

The starting grid for the Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich 2015 has been confirmed - Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for the race on Sunday in a turbulent qualifying session, beating Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel. Over the course of the day 35,000 motorsport fans followed the qualifying and the first races in the GP2 and GP3 partner series in Spielberg. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup also saw qualifying today ahead of a Sunday race. On Saturday evening, Niki Lauda, Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger & Co took part in the dress rehearsal for the 2015 Legends Parade at the Red Bull Ring.

Top of the pack despite spinning

Mercedes clearly dominated qualifying for the Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich 2015. Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the eighth time this season, beating team-mate Nico Rosberg, despite both silver Mercedes spinning off the track on their final lap. The Brit said in the press conference: “When I span off, I wasn’t concerned about the pole too much at the time, but about the car. I was in seventh gear and standing still. Naturally, shortly afterwards, I was thinking I could have lost it there.” Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg appeared frustrated, saying: “I was level with Lewis going into the last two corners, and then I probably overdid it.” Rosberg’s fellow German Sebastian Vettel was not fully satisfied either, saying: “I actually thought that I could have had more of a say today, but those two were just too quick. We will still battle tomorrow and get the best out of it. I am really looking forward to the race at the Red Bull Ring. I know the circuit well and I really like the surroundings.”

Lauda Prost battle is back on

On Saturday evening, eight international Formula 1 legends also started their super-fast cars from the turbo era at the Red Bull Ring – in the dress rehearsal for the 2015 Legends Parade. Gerhard Berger made his Ferrari F1 87/88c roar, just like he did last year, flanked by, among others, all three Formula 1 World Champions from 1983, 1984 and 1985 – Nelson Piquet, Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. Niki Lauda has been doing some serious training in the paddock, even taking a tractor out for a few laps as part of the special Styrian Evening on Thursday. He is therefore raring to go into his reignited battle with former McLaren team-mate Alain Prost. Visitors can get up close to the original cars, in which history was made, at the F1 Village during the 2015 Formula 1 weekend in Austria. The high-horsepower beasts can also be seen in action on Sunday, shortly before the start of this year’s Austrian Grand Prix.
