Hamilton wins after spectacular end to the F1-weekend

What a dramatic and thrilling Grand Prix weekend in Austria! After turbulent practice sessions and an action-packed qualifying, Lewis Hamilton raced to victory in the Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich 2016 after beating off, and coming together with, Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. Max Verstappen took a sensational second place in the home race of his TAG Heuer Red Bull Racing, with Kimi Räikkönen in third.

The Friendly Motorsport Festival was packed with spectacular racing action. Despite the Grand Prix weekend featuring the birthdays of Daniel Ricciardo (who turned 27) and Sebastian Vettel (29), it was three other drivers who ended up happiest of all on the podium. Lewis Hamilton started well on pole to set the pace. His German team-mate Nico Rosberg was able to move up from a sixth-place start to take the lead, however, putting him on the brink of a hat-trick of Austrian GP wins (having won in 2014 and 2015), only to suffer braking problems in the very last lap. At the infamous Remus curve at the Red Bull Ring, the World Championship leader then crashed into his stablemate Lewis Hamilton, damaging his front wing and slipping down the standings. Lewis Hamilton was free to race home for his first ever race victory at the Red Bull Ring. Thousands of Dutch fans cheered on Max Verstappen as he took a sensational second place in the home Grand Prix of his TAG Heuer Red Bull Racing team. Completing the podium was Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen.

Unique experience with the chequered flag

They were all shown the chequered flag by an unusual source on Sunday – Austrian fan Michael Kogelmann won the honour of waving the flag to end the race. The 42-year-old’s image was voted the best of 3,000 entries taken at the F1 Village’s photo box, ensuring for a day he is going to remember for a long time. He says: “When I heard what you could win in the photo competition, I knew I definitely had to take part. It was extremely exciting, the greatest thing I’ve ever experienced at Formula 1. I definitely won’t ever forget it!”

The friendly motorsports festival

There was a range of top entertainment for the fans over the entire 2016 F1 weekend in Spielberg! Helping the fans to get up close to the Formula 1 on Sunday morning was the red carpet, where the drivers and team bosses signed autographs and posed for souvenir photos for visitors. The Legends Parade, the emotional highlight at the Red Bull Ring, also made the F1 race weekend at the Red Bull Ring unique once more. Motorsport fans were treated before the start of the 2016 Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich to 14 international motorsport legends, including Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger, Dieter Quester, Jochen Mass, Jos Verstappen and Hans-Joachim Stuck, taking BMW M1 Procars onto the circuit to bring the race feeling of 1979 and 1980 back to life!

Voestalpine and Projekt Spielberg extended their cooperation focused on the multi-functional welcome and event centre for a further two years. Dr Wolfgang Eder, Voestalpine chairman, says: “The international appeal of the Austrian Grand Prix goes well beyond Europe. By extending our engagement in Spielberg until 2018 we are making another important statement for Styria as a technological and business region.”
