MANY ROADS LEAD TO SPIELBERG

Many thousands of fans are to make a pilgrimage to Spielberg to ensure they don’t miss out on the event of the year at Austria’s most beautiful show venue. Alongside the Formula 1, three further racing series await visitors, as does a spectacular side programme and a big portion of local charm from the Styria region. To make getting there as pleasant as possible, it is recommended that you leave your own car in the garage and use alternative options.

Many roads lead to Spielberg… and not all are of the tarmac variety. All the visitors to the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria in Spielberg can look forward to an eventful and unforgettable weekend full of action, emotion and sporting highlights. To make getting there as pleasant as possible, there are a wide variety of transport options for reaching Spielberg – including without taking your own car.

On rails. For all holders of a Formula 1 ticket, Projekt Spielberg is providing four special ÖBB trains including bus transfers from Spielberg train station to the Red Bull Ring. The trains depart from Graz, Linz, Vienna Meidling and Villach. Further information on departure times and intermediary stations can be found via www.gpticketshop.com. There will also be an intensified scheduled regional train service from Austrian train operator ÖBB. The station closest to the Grand Prix in Spielberg is called Knittelfeld. Regional buses will depart from there every 15 minutes for the Red Bull Ring.

Easily with the bus. Alternatively there is the option of arriving by bus. Along with the regular public bus (Postbus) schedule, additional transfers are planned from the Judenburg bus station and the Knittelfeld train station. All the info on these can be found via www.postbus.at. As an additional option, Eventbus is operating buses especially for the Formula 1 weekend from right across Austria, with over 200 stopping and boarding points. Details via www.eventbus.eu.

Camping in pole position. Stay like a king in your own tent! The campsites are located just a few minutes’ walk from the Red Bull Ring. You can therefore always be right by the goings-on, just a few steps away from the racetrack. While others queue, you can have a relaxed breakfast, walk calmly through the F1 Village and take advantage of the attractive offerings of the Spielberg region. Those who choose to arrive on Wednesday or on the Thursday public holiday will avoid the stress of the traffic and finding a good spot. Arrival and departure is possible for the whole day on Wednesday and Thursday. This is also possible on Friday until 0600 and from 1400 to 1600 CET, plus from 1900 on Sunday - but no arrivals or departures are possible on Saturday.

Park & Bike. “Take your bike” is a major theme when it comes to getting to the Grand Prix of Austria. Those who bring their own bicycle can avoid annoying queues, show off their sturdy calves and enjoy the fine nature around Spielberg. In the immediate vicinity of the Red Bull Ring there are three Park&Bike car parks available - Grüne Lagune (14.2 km), Großlobming (7.3 km) and Weißkirchen (9.7 km). The bike parking area is located right by the entrance to the Red Bull Ring. The cycle paths from the Park&Bike car parks to the racing circuit are all signposted. Getting to the car parks: Grüne Lagune and Großlobming are reached via the S36 Murtal Road from St. Michael with the St. Lorenzen exit. Weißkirchen is reached from Klagenfurt directly with the B78 to Weißkirchen or with the B317 via Judenburg to Weißkirchen.

Early bird. The early bird catches the worm, as is known. Those who still want to take their own four wheels to the Red Bull Ring need to account for delays due to the heavy traffic. Projekt Spielberg therefore recommends making your car journey as early as possible. To save any last-minute anxiety and to be fully on the safe side, arrival before 07:30 CET should be planned. All the car parks are located within walking distance of the race circuit. From Thursday to Saturday, the gastro tent in the F1 Village is open from 7 in the morning, and on Sunday it opens at 6 in the morning. On Sunday all the early arrivals will receive a special reward from Projekt Spielberg in the shape of a free breakfast with coffee and a local Styrian pastry – vouchers are to be handed out at the car parks.

Directions. Please follow the local traffic guidance system and the instructions of the organisers and authorities. Additionally, regular updates on the latest traffic situation will be provided by the Ö3 traffic news service as well as the free mobile app from road authority ASFINAG. If travelling by car, it is recommended to occupy all seats. That
will relieve the traffic and help everyone get to his or her destination quicker. Arrival via S36 Murtal Road. From the St. Michael hub, arrival is possible via the Knittelfeld-West exit (for green tickets) or the Zeltweg-Ost/Red Bull Ring exit (for yellow & blue tickets). Those coming from Klagenfurt should take the Zeltweg-West exit (for green, yellow and blue tickets).

Straight through the air. For those who prefer to fly, the Hinterstoisser airfield can be used for civil purposes. Permission to land is essential, however. For helicopters, the heliport of Projekt Spielberg is available in close proximity to the Red Bull Ring. The Wucher Helicopter company will handle the coordination of flights for the whole Grand Prix weekend. Please be aware that notice of helicopter landings must be provided in advance.
