Perfekt Lap with Daniel Ricciardo at the Red Bull Ring

In just a few days’ time, Formula 1 cars will be zooming around the Red Bull Ring again. Everything is ready for the Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich 2015 - Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s second home race. The Austrian racing team’s star drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat, are very well acquainted with the 4.3 kilometre long circuit in Austria’s Styria region. In order to prepare as best as they can for the race, the drivers have regularly been in the simulator for hours on end, working on the details. Both drivers fondly remember the return of Formula 1 to Austria last year and are confident that the Grand Prix in Spielberg will be another highlight of their season this year.

Simulated racing and a genuine Lederhosen feeling

The Formula 1 drivers have been training in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing simulator in Milton Keynes up to eight hours per day – as they memorise every detail of the world’s racing circuits. Their simulator is so realistic that it has been known to make people who use it for the first time be seasick. The drivers take a seat in an original F1 car shell while a racing circuit is projected onto a 180-degree panoramic screen by three projectors. By now Daniel Ricciardo knows the Red Bull Ring and its key sections virtually in his sleep. The 25-year-old Australian says: “It drives very similarly to the real cars. You need to have the trained feeling of a racing driver. You can’t get any closer than it to the real thing. He describes the Austrian racing circuit by saying: “The track is short and doesn’t have all too many curves, but they are pretty quick. You can go even quicker into them if you want. The first curve is especially cool as it goes uphill.” The likeable driver has been preparing for his team’s 2015 home race at the Red Bull Ring with some lightning-quick laps on the simulator. In a virtual test drive, Daniel Ricciardo reached close to 300 km/h on the 4.3 kilometre-long circuit, twice needing to switch down into first gear, and facing forces of up to 2.9G. Before the F1 cars start their engines again in Spielberg, the drivers will have countless virtual kilometres at the circuit under their belts.

Australian with Austrian credentials

“I tried on some Lederhosen for the first time a few days before the race in 2014, and I was surprised how good I felt in them,” says a grinning Daniel Ricciardo. He still has fond memories of last year’s Austrian Grand Prix, saying: “The atmosphere all around in the air was fantastic. It felt like a big festival, with the campsites around the circuit. The people enjoyed the atmosphere and the landscape. You could feel that at the Drivers’ Parade too. It was the best in the whole season.”

A young man, but an old hand at the Red Bull Ring

The winner of the Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich 2015 will be confirmed on Sunday after 71 laps and 307 kilometres of racing have been completed. Someone who already has numerous wins and podium finishes at the Red Bull Rung – in young racers’ series, such as Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula 3, is Daniil Kvyat. The 21-year-old Russian says on his team’s home race: “I like the circuit and I have a lot of very good memories to associate with it. I hope I can enjoy this year’s Grand Prix weekend in Austria just as much as last year’s, when I was driving for Toro Rosso still.”
