Spielberg: Ferraris Lay down challenge to mercedes

After last year’s comeback Grand Prix, this time around Austrian motorsport fans only had a year to wait to see F1 cars racing again in their country. The arrival of the fans went perfectly, with the Park&Bike option again being eagerly taken up in 2015, while thousands of excited Formula 1 fans have been mixing around the campsites. There were 25,000 fans filling the stands nicely over the day on Friday during the two practice sessions. There was perfect sunny motorsport weather to give a foretaste of another stunning backdrop to come at the Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich in Spielberg. Some top lap times were posted by Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen as there looks set to be an intense battle at the Red Bull Ring between Mercedes and Ferrari. Getting into their first slice of racing action of the weekend were also the GP3 and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup drivers. The GP2 drivers were even jostling for starting positions in qualifying over the 4.3-kilometre circuit.

Ferrari breathing down Mercedes’ neck

There is great excitement among motorsport fans – as a thrilling battle between leading constructors Mercedes, and their closest rivals this year, Ferrari, appears to be brewing ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix. The top four drivers in the title race dominated the first two practice sessions on Friday. Over 25,000 Formula 1 enthusiasts came to watch Nico Rosberg first speed to the quickest time on the Austrian asphalt, only for Sebastien Vettel to be the quickest later. Team-mates Kimi Räikkönen and World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton also put in superb first performances in Spielberg. As a suitable present for the guests, Projekt Spielberg has given all the drivers traditional Styrian hats to fit them out perfectly for the racing weekend in the Murtal valley. The drivers appeared delighted to receive the surprise presents.

The legends can’t wait

The voice of Formula 1 in Austria, Heinz Prüller, did not want to miss out on the second home race of Infiniti Red Bull Racing, of course. He is looking forward to the 2015 Legends Parade, in particular. He had loads of anecdotes up his sleeves today - he spoke about Gerhard Berger, who has performed a marvellous service for F1 including ten race wins. The reporting legend said, smiling: “Gerhard Berger put the oomph into Formula 1”. The 2015 Legends Parade is reflecting the immense power and fierce sounds of the engines of the turbo era that Formula 1 fans across the world love so dearly. The names of eight international motorsport idols who will well and truly rock the Red Bull Ring with cars from the 1980s could not be any bigger - Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger, Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost, Jean Alesi, Pierluigi Martini, Riccardo Patrese and Christian Danner. The high-horsepower beasts can be seen in action on Saturday (20 June) from 18:30 to 19:00 in their dress rehearsal before their big appearance on Sunday (21 June), before the Grand Prix starts, from 12:40 to 12:45.
