THREE GENERATIONS OF FORMULA 1 DRIVERS AT THE RED BULL RING

There has been one topic dominating discussions within Austrian sport for several months – the return of Formula 1 to the country after an 11-year hiatus. There is huge anticipation building in the Spielberg region and the whole country ahead of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria 2014. The Red Bull Ring is to show off its new look in a few weeks, as the elite race series is given a welcome back to Austrian soil against a stunning backdrop from 19 to 22 June. As the first foretaste of an unforgettable Grand Prix weekend, Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull motorsport adviser Dr Helmut Marko and Formula 1 legend Gerhard Berger brought three generations of Formula 1 drivers to the racing track in the Styria region. Sebastian Vettel and Gerhard Berger completed a few laps of the circuit and swapped both cars and experiences.

Home Grand Prix for Red Bull Racing. The days are being counted down until Formula 1 brings top motor sport back to Austria. A foretaste of the big event was provided by a media talk with the top-class guests to the Red Bull Ring on Tuesday. Together with Red Bull motor sport adviser Dr Helmut Marko, star driver Sebastian Vettel took a look around Spielberg to see the final touches being applied at full speed for the Grand Prix of Austria. The German appeared excited as he spoke to the international press, saying: “It will be a very special Grand Prix for the whole team. The facilities here are cutting edge, there is plenty of work going on to ensure that. The stands will all be sold out. It gives you another extra kick as a driver to race in front of such a backdrop!” Red Bull Racing is abuzz with anticipation ahead of the home Grand Prix, something that motor sport adviser Dr Helmut Marko confirmed, saying: “We will make extra efforts of course. Our clear goal is not to just finish third.” Sebastian Vettel did a few laps of the circuit as part of ServusTV filming for the Comeback of Formula 1 documentary (to be shown on Friday 20 June 2014 at 20:15 CET) in
an RB8 along with Gerhard Berger, who took to his original 1988 Ferrari. The Austrian legend gave the Red Bull driver some useful tips for the Austrian circuit that he himself competed on many times in his career.

Legends parade will be emotional highlight. Gerhard Berger associates many fond memories with Spielberg. “I gladly think back to the first time I drove at the Österreichring. It was a wonderful time. I told Sebastian that in those days you could get cows crossing the track. He didn’t quite believe me though, I fear,” Berger joked. He enjoyed a very personal reunion on Tuesday, saying: “Today after 25 years I once again sat in a Ferrari of the time. It was a wonderful
feeling.” After completing a few laps, the cars were exchanged and Sebastian Vettel took to the circuit in the Ferrari. He said: “It is fantastic to drive such an historic car. In those days lots of manual work was needed. It feels so direct in a nice way. It’s a great feeling, which finds expression in the performance. Ideally I would have liked to drive further with it.” Formula 1 legend Gerhard Berger can barely wait for the Austrian Grand Prix – on the one hand because he will get to see the cars of the elite series back in his home country, and also because he will play a major role in one of the highlights of the weekend. Together with all the former Austrian Formula 1 drivers still living, like Niki Lauda, Helmut Marko, Dieter Quester, Hans Binder, Karl Wendlinger, Alexander Wurz, Patrick Friesacher and Christian Klien, he will be revving the engine and driving on race day in the legends parade with original cars.
