8 Facts about the Austrian GP: Statistics can be exciting!

Marc Marquez is currently the most efficient rider. The Red Bull Ring is the fastest race track. The Grand Prix at the Spielberg can only be won from Pole Position. Valentino Rossi has a problem at Spielberg – and these are not just our assertions, we can prove them! Here comes our ‘numbers game’ for the MotoGP World Championship in Austria.

Fact 1: Nobody wins more than Marc Marquez

In his MotoGP career, the Spanish rider has been on the podium 57 times – 32 of those were wins. His winning rate stands at 56%. For Valentino Rossi, this ratio lies at 89 wins from 189 podiums (47%). Only one rider has been more efficient with an unbelievable rate of 77% - Giacomo Agostini with 68 wins out of 88 podiums. Interesting side-fact: The Italian legend never came home in third position in the premier class…

Fact 2: No one is as strong in Qualifying as Marc Marquez

Right now, the Spanish rider from Cevera has started in 82 MotoGP Grands Prix – 41 of those from Pole Position. This amazing statistic means that the reigning world champion was the fastest rider in 50% of all the Qualifying sessions in which he has participated. By comparison, Jorge Lorenzo has a ratio of 23.5%, Valentino Rossi 18.1% and Dani Pedrosa 15.7%.

Fact 3: Races are won from pole position at the Red Bull Ring

The empirical evidence is limited, but since the return of the Motorcycle World Championship in Austria, starting from grid position 1 has proven to be the recipe for wins. In all three categories (Moto3, Moto2, MotoGP), the Pole-Setter went on to win the race.

Fact 4: Red Bull Ring – nothing's faster

There is only one way… full throttle! This is certainly true at the Red Bull Ring. Last year's Grand Prix was ridden with an average speed of 182,4 km/h and it's been the fastest race since 1994! Back then, Mick Doohan took the win in the 500cc class with an average speed of 203.8 km/h at the Hockenheimring.

Fact 5: The Doctor and the Spielberg – not a love affair (yet)

The Red Bull Ring is the only circuit on the current Grand Prix calendar where Valentino Rossi has not yet won. In the 1990s, Vale failed twice to achieve that target: In 1996 he came third, and the following year in 1997 he finished second, just 0.004 seconds behind race winner Noboru Ueda. In the premier class, Rossi has taken wins on 26 different circuits.

Fact 6: Valentino Rossi is best of the best

It's now high time to celebrate the 9-time World Champion, because statistically, he is the best rider of all time. For example, he has a total of 5,799 World Championship points in his account whereas Dani Pedrosa is second with just 3,958. Or what about Valentino’s 189 premier class podiums? In this category of statistics, Dani Pedrosa is again second with 109 podiums.  And how about his 89 premier class wins? Giacomo Agostini ‘only’ achieved 68 of them. And… Rossi has not finished yet, respect!

Fact 7: Experience makes the champions

In the MotoGP race on Sunday, there will be 8 riders on the grid with the experience of more than 200 GP race starts: Andrea Dovizioso (268), Hector Barbara (253), Alvaro Bautista (248), Dani Pedrosa (269), Andrea Iannone (203), Aleix Espargaro (206), Jorge Lorenzo (260) and – of course – Valentino Rossi, who is the only one in the exclusive 300 club with 358 starts.

Fact 8: The Championship has never been this exciting

Only 31 points separate Marc Marquez in first position and Dani Pedrosa in fifth. The fight for the title hasn’t been this close since the introduction of the new points system in 1993. The current record comes from 2006 when P1 and P5 in the World Championship were separated by a mere 51 points after 10 races.
