Breathtaking moves, top-class racing, a full house at the Red Bull Ring and two Ducatis in the top-spots – that was the „NeroGiardini Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich 2016“. Andrea Iannone took his first MotoGP-victory at the end of a fantastic weekend. Fellow Italian and teammate Andrea Dovizioso finished second, Jorge Lorenzo from Spain came in third.
Iannone, who started from pole position, went clear of the rest of the field together with Dovizioso after a couple of laps and some initial fighting. From then on the decision was only to be made between the two Ducatis, with Dovizioso leading in the beginning, but finally being overtaken by Iannone, who finished with a lead of 0.938 seconds and celebrated an emotional moment: “Ducati returns after six years without winning. To describe this feeling is not easy, it is unbelievable. A great day for Ducati.”
Superstar Valentino Rossi had nothing to do with the win at the Red Bull Ring and came in fourth – 3.815 seconds behind the winner. Right in front of him Jorge Lorenzo finished fourth on the second Yamaha. The Hondas with Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa didn’t come close to the absolute top-spots either, finishing fifth and seventh respectively.
Just before the MotoGP, the Moto2-riders had their big moment – at the end of which Johann Zarco won. The Frechman made some headway a couple of laps before the end after a tough fight with Italian Franco Morbidelli, Marcel Schrotter and Thomas Luthi. Morbidelli came in second with Spaniard Alex Rins, who fought his way to the front just in time, in third place. Zarco then put on a great show: He slipped into a pair of “Lederhosen”, did a backflip of the tyres and only then went on to celebrate his victory on the lap – to loud cheers by the excited Austrian fans.
Moto3 started the raceday at the Red Bull Ring with a sensational race on the new tarmac. In the end Joan Mir from won, but the Spainard had to go through a tough fight with South African Brad Binder, who came in second, and Italian Enea Bastianini, who finished third. The top-three were involved in an intense battle with fourth-placed Fabio Quartararo and fifth Philipp Oettl, during which the lead changed in almost every turn and which made the fans jump from their seats already in the first race of the day.
Spanish rider Aleix Viu won the second race of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Ayumu Sasaki followed in second place, Marc Garcia finished third. The ADAC Junior Cup powered by KTM also had the second race on Sunday with two riders from the Netherlands in the top-spots: Finn de Bruin won, Joep Overbeeke finished second and Mate Laczko from Hungary ended the race in third place.
Immediately before the MotoGP-stars started their race, a world-premiere took place at the Red Bull Ring: The KTM RC16, the bike that will be in the MotoGP for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in 2017, was shown to the fans for the first time. Mika Kallio and Alex Hofmann took the new racing-machine on the track on the maiden voyage.
