For the first time in 19 years the biggest stars of the motorbike world championship have officially taken to the Red Bull Ring on Friday. At the “NeroGiardini Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich 2016”, the stars of MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 had their first free practice sessions, where Marc Marquez and his colleagues gave a taste of what to expect over the weekend – with Andrea Dovizioso getting the fastest lap of the day.
Spanish Suzuki-rider Maverick Vinales clocked the fastest lap in FP1, followed by two Ducatis with Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone. The Italians fought back in the second session with Dovizioso nailing the fastest lap of the day with a time of 1:23.617 minutes and Iannone right behind him. Vinales made it to third spot followed by Valentino Rossi, who ended both sessions in fourth place. Marc Marquez finished in sixth and tenth spot.
Thomas Luthi was the fastest man in Moto2. The swiss rider finished FP2 with a time of 1:29,695 minutes. Frenchman Johann Zarco, who was quickest in the first session, finished the afternoon in third place behind Alex Rins from Spain. Brad Binder dominated the day in Moto3. The South African from Red Bull KTM Ajo nailed the fastest times in both sessions ahead of Joan Mir (ESP) in FP1 and Italian Enea Bastini in FP2. Frenchman Fabio Quartararo ended both runs in third place – just ahead of Bo Bendsneyder on the second bike from Red Bull KTM Ajo.
The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup already had the qualifying on Friday – with two Spanish riders in front: Aleix Viu took the pole position with Marc Garcia in second place. Ayumu Sasaki from Japan finished third and will therefore complete the front line for the first race of the weekend on Saturday.
The Spielberg MotoGP Fan Village also had a lot to offer. Spectacular trial- and stunt-shows were on as several of the stars from the MotoGP came to sign autographs – among others Marc Marquez paid a visit the fans. The Spaniard was fascinated by the crowd from Styria at least since he visited Graz on Wednesday.
Saturday at the Red Bull Ring will be all about qualifying. MotoGP will decide their starting grid for the first world-championship-race in Austria after an absence of 19 years between 14:10 and 14:50. Before that the Moto3 will have their qualifying, afterwards the Moto2 will find the line-up for Sunday. Before the day is over two races are on: the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at 16:30 and the ADAC Junior Cup powered by KTM at 17:35 – the first of two races for both series.
After that the day is far from over – at the Spielberg MotoGP Fan Village the fans can expect a full programme. Trial- and FMX-shows for example. Or the Nick Young AC/DC Tribute and Meilenstein on the main stage. The Steiermark and the Party Tent both offer a great atmosphere, while the Red Bull Skydive Show will put on an action-packed display in the sky above the Spielberg.
