ADAC GT Masters: Grasser Racing takes the win at the Red Bull Ring

The final race at the Red Bull Ring went like a dream for the home drivers and teams at the 2017 ADAC GT Masters. Local team Grasser Racing repeated their triumph from 2015 with Christian Engelhart (GER) and Rolf Ineichen (SUI) taking the chequered flag ahead of BWT Mücke Motorsport’s Austrian hero Lucas Auer and his German partner Sebastian Asch. A total of 10,000 spectators turned up to enjoy the weekend of motorsports at the Spielberg track.

Thrilling second heat in ADAC GT Masters

Christian Engelhart of Knittelfeld-based Grasser Racing Team started the second race from pole, having been third in the race of the previous day – Philipp Eng from Salzburg – took P5 on the grid, lining up ahead of Lucas Auer’s team-mate Sebastian Asch. Engelhart got off in the front and dominated his heat. Asch took third and was the first on in pits to hand the race over to the Tyrolean DTM star.

Rolf Ineichen took over from Engelhart and continued in the same dominant fashion. Auer put in one hot lap after the other to take second place,  to close in on the lead but the green Grasser-Lamborghini didn’t let the win slip through its hands and it was the local hero squad from Murtal who got a second home win following the triumph in  2015.

The race from Team boss Gottfried Grasser’s point of view

At the prize giving ceremony, team boss Gottfried Grasser stated: “I am so proud on our team. After qualifying they could repair the car in just a couple of hours and brought it back on track. They deserve this win!”

“The start was decisive,” added the team boss. “But for us the big excitement came in the second part of the race because we were losing more and more engine power. When the cut outs got worse, we started to bite our nails, wondering whether we would even reach the finish line. But in the end it came toghether and we are super happy!” Swiss driver Rolf Ineichen brought the win home by a whisker and as soon as he crossed the line he had to bring the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 to a halt on the edge of the track.

“The winning feeling is mega”

Lucas Auer was more than happy with his debut in the ADAC GT Masters series, a debut that included a podium. “Sebastian drove a mega start, unbelievable! I was able to make up another place. It’s just a mega feeling. I’m happy to get on the podium for Mücke. It’s really cool!” Taking third in Saturday’s race, Philipp Eng and Rick Collard (GRB) brought their BMW home in fifth.

Bad luck for Thomas Preining in Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland

From fifth spot on the grid, Thomas Preining had a good starting position for the second race of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, but as he took his place on the grid, his car began to develop some technical problems and the young driver from Upper Austria had to retire. Christopher Zöchling brought his second home race to an end in sixth. In the GT4 European Championship, Austrians Gottfried Pilz and team Mate Lennart Marioneck (GER) took third.

10,000 Fans, former Formula-1-driver and Austria’s ÖSV Paralympic team visit Spielberg

A total of 10,000 petrolheads, including former Formula One driver Felipe Nasr from Brazil, came to the heart of Styria to see the ADAC GT Masters 2017 and they were rewarded with brilliant on-track action and close racing, as well as an army of local heroes to cheer for. Members of the ÖSV Paralympic team were also on site to experience the thrill of motorsports – and enjoy a taxi ride around the Red Bull Ring in a Volkswagen Golf TCR. Markus Salcher, two-time gold medallist at the Paralympic Games in Sochi 2014, presented the trophies for the first race of the ADAC Formula 4.
