The spirit of Le Mans in Spielberg: What the legends say

Le Mans legends Brendon Hartley (New Zealand), Hans-Joachim Stuck (Germany) and Neel Jani (Switzerland) recently took part in the Legends Parade in the framework of the Formula 1 Großer Preis von Österreich. We asked them to analyse the Red Bull Ring prior to the European Le Mans series' visit to the circuit between 21.7. and 23.7.

What do you get when you ask three Le Mans heroes for their opinion of the Spielberg-based race track? A learned track analysis, a declaration of love (well, almost at least) and childhood memories steeped in motor sport history:

Brendon, looking at the track in the foothills of Mount Spielberg, what’s your analysis? And are there any similarities to Le Mans?

Brendon Hartley: Mhm... It’s very stubborn and demanding – just like the one in Le Mans (grins). This guarantees that it leaves some room for errors which can give a race the excitement it needs. However: At the end of the day, it’s a race track that only allows one approach: All-out attack! Besides that: It’s situated in a beautiful area, the mountain backdrop is simply astonishing and spectators are treated to fantastic facilities.

Hans-Joachim: What’s your thoughts on Spielberg?

Hans-Joachim Stuck: Assuming motor sport is a great sport, Austria’s Spielberg is its pinnacle. Here, fans are given the chance to experience the connection between the highly complex technology and the drivers up-close. And what’s more: The Red Bull Ring offers a bit of everything: From vintage cars to trucks, to Formula 1 and Le Mans racing – a dream come true for every motor sport enthusiast. It’s well worth a visit, that’s for sure.

Neel, how would you describe your relationship with Spielberg?

Neel Jani: My relationship with this track is based on old memories. I came here for the first time at the age of nine. At that time, my dad still raced and we came here from Switzerland on a motorail train. But it gets crazier still: Back then, the drivers would drive their race cars (!!!) from the city to the track’s premises. I cherish these memories. I loved it back then and nothing has changed. After all, I still like coming here (laughs). And fans should love it too for Spielberg is a sensory El Dorado for all motor sport nuts.
