ADAC GT Masters: Looking back on the amazing Father’s Day at the Red Bull Ring

What a spectacular motorsports weekend in Spielberg: 5 racing series, 11 races, some 160 race cars on the track – and lots of reason for Austrians to celebrate. On Saturday and Sunday 12,000 visitors witnessed a master class of racing in Spielberg. Here’s what happened.

GT Masters: Corvette rules premier class

The Corvette C7 GT3-R’s 600 bhp were too much for the competition at the Red Bull Ring. Daniel Keilwitz and Marvin Kirchhöfer (Callaway Competition) won both races in Spielberg, thus significantly extending their lead in the overall standings. On Sunday, starting from the back of the grid in 24th place, the Austrian racing team ORANGE1 by GRT Grasser (Mirko Bortolotti and Andrea Caldarelli) treated the spectators to an unbelievable display of driving skills to finish the race in 2nd place. The secret to this Herculean feat was a successful tire gamble with slicks in the rain...

The results of the Austrian racers at a glance:

  • Max Hofer (Audi R8 LMS, Phoenix Racing) was the strongest local hero with an 8th place while his teammate Philip Ellis retired form Sunday’s race in the very first lap.
  • For Christopher Zöchling and his BMW M6 GT3 prepared by the MRS GT-Racing team, it was the other way round. They suffered a DNF on Saturday and finished 8th on Sunday.
  • Klaus Bachler (Porsche 911, KÜS TEAM75 Bernhard) came in 15th in race 1 and 29th in race 2.
  • Clemens Schmid (Mercedes-AMG GT3, AutoArena Motorsport) crossed the line in 23rd place on Saturday, improving to 20th on Sunday.

Formula 4: Austria on the rostrum!

Mick Wishofer, the only Austrian on the grid of this Formula series, made his aspirations for his home race clear: “I want to be on the podium at the Red Bull Ring!” And the 18-year-old achieved just that with a 3rd place in the second race on Saturday. Adding to his booty in Spielberg were an 8th place in the first race and a 6th place in race three. Wishofer is now 4th in the overall standings.

What else happened? Enzo Fittipaldi, the grandson of the double F1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi has won his first F4 race in Spielberg. We would like to congratulate him on this achievement!

Porsche Carrera Cup: Double pole position and double victory for Thomas Preining

By a solid margin, the 19-year-old from Linz was the most successful Austrian on this weekend: In both Porsche Carrera Cup races, Thomas Preining (BWT Lechner Racing) put his Porsche 911 GT3 on pole position and crossed the chequered flag in first place.

Luca Rettenbacher came in 5th on Saturday and retired on Sunday. Patrick Sager dropped out of race 1 and finished race 2 in 23rd place.

TCR Germany: With a win, Harald Proczyk defends 1st in his class

Harald Proczyk (HP Racing International) came to the Red Bull Ring to maintain his lead in the Touring Car Championship. Mission accomplished! With his triumphant win on Sunday and a 5th place in the first race, the 42-year-old impressively defended his place at the top of the TCR Germany series.

With his Peugeot 308 TCR, Lukas Niedertscheider (Niedertscheider Motorsport) failed to finish Saturday’s race, but achieved a top ten place the second race on Sunday.

Renault Clio Cup: Tomáš Pekař wins both races

At both races of the Renault Clio Cup Central Europe, the grid was packed with 31 racers – a new record at the Red Bull Ring. Saturday belonged to Tomáš Pekař (Carpek Service) who started from pole and also won the day’s race. On Sunday, championship leader Karol Urbaniak (BM Racing Team) intended to “retaliate”. However, the pole man from Poland crashed out which benefitted Tomáš Pekař who managed to add race 2 to his tally, making him the new leader in the overall standings.

And what about the Austrians? Antonio Citera (RTM Motorsport) finished both races in 17th place while Sandro Soubek (Mair Racing Osttirol) achieved a 22nd place on Saturday and retired on Sunday in the very first corner.
