DTM 2017 at the Spielberg: Ekström takes the win, Lucas Auer will fight back on Sunday

Mixed feelings for Austria’s racers after the first day at the Red Bull Ring.

Lucas Auer (DTM) and his compatriot Ferdinand Habsburg (Formula 3) mounted spectacular comeback during their races but lost out in their respective championships. Both drivers are more than keen to fight back on Sunday! In the Audi Sport TT Cup, Max Franz is frustrated by the “speedy swine” Benni Raich…

A set back for Lucas Auer as Ekström in upwind

Championship leader Mattias Ekström waited until Lucas Auer’s home race at the Red Bull Ring to take his first win of the 2017 season, increasing his lead in the DTM Championship so that he now leads the Austrian by 31 points. Is that a decisive blow? “No,” says the Swede. “There are a lot of points to up for grabs. Nothing’s been decided in the championship, yet!”

But Lucas Auer was disappointed by finishing 8th in the first race. “I made up four places from my qualifying position, which is alright, but I’m not satisfied.” DTM boss Gerhard Berger’s nephew is also going to choose a more aggressive approach tomorrow: “I’d rather be the hunted instead of the hunter because that way I’m already out in front. But I have to aim to attack tomorrow. I’m sure the title race will go down to the wire at Hockenheim.”

The Emperor’s great-grandchild in the pursuit race

Not everything went to plan in F3 qualifying for Ferdinand Habsburg. He had to start from P13 but used that position to stage an impressive comeback and that showed off his undoubted talent. In the end, the 20-year-old finished sixth. Britain’s Callum Ilott took the win while his countryman Lando Norris took another step toward the title by coming home in fourth place. It’s an impressive debut season in the FIA Formula 3.

Skiers take ot the slopes of Spielberg in the Audi Sport TT Cup

Skiing star Max Franz is the speed demon on the slopes so surely he should be in front here. But at Spielberg it was cornering expert Benni Raich who cut the speed specialist down to size by lapping one second faster – per lap! “Why’s that swine going so fast?” Max Franz joked. He’ll have his chance for revenge on Sunday during the second race of the Audi Sport TT Cup.
