ELMS electrifies: Formula E champion triumphs at the Red Bull Ring

After scoring the title in Formula E, Frenchman Jean Eric Vergne has another reason to celebrate – his G-Drive Racing team has also won at Spielberg. Surprisingly, the man on pole was not able to win the race in any class of the European Le Mans Series. A recap of the race Sunday:

In the premier class of the ELMS, the crown goes to Russia: G-Drive Racing won the race after 160 laps and a big lead of 20 seconds with Duqueine Engineering coming in second. Racing Engineering secured 3rd place, a meagre 3 tenths behind. IDEC Sport – the fastest qualifying team – finished the race 5th. After 158 laps, Former F1 driver Felipe Nasr and his Cetilar Villorba Corse team crossed the finishing line in 12th place.

One of the drivers of the triumphant G-Drive Racing team is Jean Eric Vergne. The reigning Formula E champion’s first words after winning the race: “It feels pretty good. It looks as if we are on a winning streak this year. I would like to thank my team for having prepared a perfect car and my team-mates for having done a great job.”

British RLR MSport managed to win the race starting 3rd on the grid. An average speed of 176.9 km/h after 148 laps and – at 1:27.867 – the fastest lap time paved the way to success. 5 seconds behind, Ecurie Ecosse/Nielsen came in 2nd, the Brits making up 7 places compared to their grid position. Polish team Inter Europol Competition conquered the third and final podium place. The Ultimate team which had started from pole only managed to come in 4th. AT Racing, the only Austrian team, crossed the finishing line in 5th.

A victory for Porsche: Starting from 2nd place on the grid, Proton Competition circled the track 147 times, winning the trophy. Fastest lap time: 01:29.517 Pole setter JMW Motorsport’s race was over after just 43 laps. 2nd and 3rd went to Spirit of Race from Switzerland and Ebimotors. The Italian team had started from the last grid place in the GTE class.

Formula Renault Eurocup

This junior series has been run since 1971 and this year, the fight for the podium places is as thrilling and multi-faceted as never before: At the Red Bull Ring, Frenchman Victor Martins was able to celebrate his first victory in the Formula Renault Eurocup which makes him the 7th winner in the 10th race of the season. His team R-ace GP dominated the race at Spielberg as his British team-mate Max Fewtrell was able to win race 1.

Michelin Le Mans Cup

In the pouring rain which resulted in the race being started behind the safety car, the ELMS’s “little brother” provided truly special racing at the Red Bull Ring. At the end of the 2-hour race, however, the teams that lead the overall standings, once again reigned supreme: With an average speed of 178 km/h after 73 laps, DKR Engineering won the race in the LMP3 class while Kessel Racing put its Ferrari 488 on the top spot in the GT3 category (170 km/h, 71 laps).
