“It was always my dream to race the quickest cars in the world. I had great respect for it ahead of today, and I didn’t sleep well. In the end it was an unbelievable experience, and an absolute highlight of my career,” said the Spaniard while sporting a massive grin. Mark Webber only had good things to say about his ‘protégé’: “He was really quiet still at breakfast. As soon as he got into the cockpit, he was 100 per cent focused and delivered a top performance on the race track.”

The Formula 1 adventure of Marc Márquez was a highlight for Austrian fans. Numerous motorsport enthusiasts came to Spielberg on Tuesday to enter for free and support the current MotoGP leader up close at the racing circuit. He took a short time to sign autographs and pose for photos in return.

Experts impressed
Over 70 journalists from across the world were accredited to attend the media talk with Marc Márquez, Mark Webber, Dr. Helmut Marko and Niki Lauda at the Red Bull Ring. The Spaniard’s Formula 1 adventure was analysed, while there was some expert talk about the latest goings-on in Formula 1 and MotoGP.

Marc Márquez
“There is a massive difference to MotoGP. The limited visibility was a great challenge, in particular, to begin with. You feel a lot more constricted in the cockpit. The braking distances and timing in turns is completely different. A Formula 1 car has much more downforce, of course, which made for a lot of fun in the part of the circuit with the most turns, in particular.”

Mark Webber
“Formula 1 and MotoGP are two completely different things. Marc made my job as an instructor very easy though. He always asked the right questions and improved lap by lap. A true pro, you could say!”

Dr. Helmut Marko
“Marc put in an impressive performance today! He improved his lap times in a very short period of time. He didn’t crash or spin once. To put that kind of performance in within such a short time says everything about his huge talent.”

Niki Lauda
“Marc put in an incredible performance today. Should he ever decide to try Formula 1, he will be welcome with Mercedes at any time.” [laughs towards Dr Helmut Marko]. Answer of Dr. Marko: “I think he knows already where he belongs.”
