Super Sunday at Spielberg: Verstappen and Leclerc on the front row

What a day for teams and fans! After a warm welcome on the Styrian Green Carpet, it was time for action in the third Free Practice session and Qualifying. Brilliant sunshine and blue skies made for a perfect day of Formula 1 with packed grandstands, enthusiastic spectators and great action. That’s how it should be!

3. Free Practice: Ferrari and Mercedes dominate

Charles Leclerc (1:03.987) was fastest, just in front of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton (1:04.130), Valtteri Bottas (1:04.221) with Sebastian Vettel (1:04.250) close behind.

Qualifying: New outright lap record!

Youngster Charles Leclerc set pole position at the Red Bull Ring – the second of his career – with a time of 1:03.003 mins. It was Ferrari’s first Pole in Austria since Michael Schumacher started on P1 in 2003. Lewis Hamilton got his Mercedes – for the moment – in P2 (1:03.262) with Max Verstappen (1:03.439) in third.

High speeds and high drama on Sunday

All three drivers looked cautiously confident during the official Qualifying Press Conference. “It won’t be easy to stay with Charles,” Lewis Hamilton said and seemed to be happy with his position. Max Verstappen: “We lost out to Ferrari and Mercedes is faster on the straights, but it has been a good qualifying for us and I’m happy.” Pole sitter Leclerc was happiest: “The car has been mega. It was a real pleasure to drive it to the limit. To get a pole position for Ferrari is a great feeling. It will be demanding on Sunday and extremely hot.”

Penalty for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton had to bite the bullet later on as he got penalized with a three-place grid sanction after holding up Kimi Räikkönen during Qualifying. Verstappen takes his spot on the front row and Bottas moves up to third.

That sets it up for some proper race action on Sunday, doesn’t it?

Flat out besides track, too

The Motorsport Party continued after Qualifying with concerts by Thorsteinn Einarson, The BossHoss and Wanda on the stage in the Fan-Zone.

The early bird catches the pastry this Sunday

Everyone who arrives early (gates open at 7 o’clock) gets a croissant, a coffee and a can of Red Bull for free. Vouchers (while stocks last) will be handed out at the entrance and are valid for the Fanzone. And it’s worth noting that everyone arriving early can get a great spot on the Styrian Green Carpet (starting at 9) and greet the teams and drivers as they arrive on race day.

There’s lots more to come after the chequered flag drops: directly after Sunday’s race, DJ Felice will take over the party at the F1 Fan Zone with DJ Ötzi stepping on stage at 6.00 pm.
