Next round for Dovizioso vs. Márquez

Additional News: KTM talks 2019 and fans celebrating the Austrian GP!

Austria’s biggest sporting event has fired into action and the results from the first practice sessions are in the books. In MotoGP’s first Free Practice session it was last year’s winner Andrea Dovizioso who topped the time sheets, posting a time of 1:23,830 minutes, a fraction ahead of team mate Jorge Lorenzo (1:24,045) and Danilo Petrucci (1:24,320), with Marc Márquez (1:24,411) and Andrea Iannone (1:24,436) following close behind.

MÀRQUEZ TOPS FP2

FP2 was delayed by roughly 15 minutes due to heavy rain and didn’t get underway until 2:20 pm. Suzuki’s Alex Rins was the first one to tackle the tricky wet and slippery conditions and most of the grid took it slow to follow his footsteps. After two thirds of the session, more than half of the riders were on the track to post some wet times. In the end, it was Marc Márquez who posted the best wet time in 1:33,995 minutes. He was followed by Scott Redding (1:34,538), Danilo Petrucci (1:34:981), Jorge Lorenzo (1:35:514) and Andrea Dovizioso (1:35:514). So after two practice sessions the duel between Márquez and Doviziozo was tied at 1:1.

KTM TALKS FUTURE PLANS AT THE RED BULL RING

Pol Espargaró and Johann Zarco will spearhead the Mattighofen’s factory squad in 2019 – but many were already aware of this news. Today, there was a press conference held in which Stefan Pierer, KTM’s CEO, and Motorsport Director Pit Beirer talked about more plans for the future and revealed that Hervé Poncharal’s Tech3 team will join the orange brigade next year.

Poncharal also announced Philipp Öttl and Marco Bezzecchi for his Tech 3 KTM Moto2 squad next season while the Red Bull Ajo Team will field Jorge Martin and Brad Binder. It was nice to hear the likeable Hervé Poncharal already pronouncing his team name in German: “Tech Drei”.

PRACTICE SESSIONS DONE – TIME TO PARTY

Today’s on track action might be over, but fans are now switching from the grandstands to the “Spielberg MotoGP Bike City”. There has already been an autograph and selfie session attended by the superstars Marc Márquez, Dani Pedrosa, Valentino Rossi, Bradley Smith, Andrea Dovizioso & Co.

But that doesn’t mean the party is over for today. Directly behind the Steiermark grandstand in the side-event centre, the party is underway: Fans will join Ö3 DJ Marco Jägert and the cover bands of Falco (Falco, The Show) and the Black Eyed Peas (Elephunk) to celebrate the opening of the Austrian GP!

SATURDAY’S PROGRAMME: QUALIFYING – AND MORE PARTY

Tomorrow morning will see the third free practice sessions for all three categories, commencing at 9:00 o’clock in the morning. The first qualifying session will follow at 12:35 pm and then the party at the “Spielberg MotoGP Bike City” will start at 5:00 pm in the afternoon.
